 Public Works Department

The Public Works Department picks up the following yard trimmings such as leaves, grass clippings, pine straw, bush clipping, and small limbs which is recycled and made into grade A compost.

The compost is then given away to the public as a free service to the community. This compost can be picked up from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday at our Composting Facility on Wendell Sears Road. For more information about the compost call the Public Works Department at (912) 389-3450.

We also pick up junk items such as bicycles, grills, swings, etc.  For information on all junk items that you would like to be picked up contact the Public Works Department (912) 389-3450.

The Public Works Department is not responsible for pick up of any household brown or white goods.  Brown goods consist of any furnishings from a home such as sofas, chairs, etc.  White goods consist of appliances.  Pick up of these goods are the responsibility of TransWaste Services.  Contact TransWaste Services at (912) 384-6001.

The Public Works Department will not pick up any building materials for businesses, contractors or rental property. Public Works will help those owners that live in the city with the removal of materials from remodeling projects that they have done themselves, as a curiosity.  In those cases we will only pick up an average size pickup truck load or less.

The Public Works Department does not pick up the following:  Shingles, tires, stumps, paint cans, or any chemical containers (drums).  Contact TransWaste at (912) 384-6001.

The Public Works Department does not pick up any materials from land clearing projects or trees cut by a contractor.

Animal control is a very useful branch of the Public Works Department, which is used to control the animals inside the city limits.  It is responsible for the picking up dead animals. That includes picking up animals off main streets, parking lots, businesses where food is served and also banks, doctor’s offices, etc.  It is the responsibility of home owner to bring dead animals to the edge of the road (prefer bagged) for Animal Control to pick up.

Animal Control will pick up animals surrendered by owners such as dogs, cats, snakes, etc.  If needed, traps can be set for stray or unwanted animals.

Responsible pet owners need to know that along with the obligation to properly feed, shelter, and care for a pet, there are laws known as ordinances, created by city government to protect the animal, the pet owner, and other members of our community.  The City of Douglas Animal Control enforces all city ordinances which pertain to animals.   See Website below:
