Cemetery
Historic Sites and Tours

The first burial in the Douglas Cemetery was David H. Kirkland (1835-1865), owner of Kirkland Store.  A walk through the historic area, located in the northeast corner, gives you a sense of pride and helps identify community pioneers.  Although aged and weatherworn, individualized monuments and markers characterize and personalize the names and dates imbedded in stone.

In 1930, Warren P. Ward, author of Ward's History of Coffee County, described the Douglas Cemetery as one of the most beautiful in South Georgia.  He gave credit to the ladies of Douglas for such beauty.   Tall Italian Cypress reaches more than 50 feet to blue skies.  Although not native to the area, the presence of these stately trees is the result of a community volunteer landscape program during the early 1900's.  Ward also noted (in 1930) that perhaps Douglas had the only cemetery in South Georgia that had a mausoleum.

For plots and burial information visit the cemetery Monday - Friday, 10AM- Noon or contact Henry Milhollin, Cemetery Manager at (912) 393-4796 or 912-389-3450

Raymond-Richardson  WWII Aviation School

In 1939, Raymond-Richardson Aviation Company was founded and operated as a WWII flight training school until late 1943.  The airfield was one of the first in South Georgia.  Nearly 10,000 cadets trained here before leaving for war.  The site is thought to be one of the last standing in the United States.  In honor of those who trained on the site and in honor of all veterans, a Veterans Memorial park has been established adjacent to the old airbase at Mickey Greer Terminal.  A WWII museum display is located inside the terminal.
