Coffee County and its county seat, Douglas, are deep in Georgia, tucked between the Okefenokee Swamp lands to the south and open farm plains to the north.  Yet no one can accuse this county of being a sleepy, Southern local.

Douglas-Coffee County, once occupied by Creek Indians, was named after General John Coffee, a hero in the War of 812.  Douglas was developed in 1858 and became a chartered city in 1899.  The town was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a presidential candidate running against Abraham Lincoln.

Douglas is recognized as one of the most progressive cities in Georgia.  Shop and stroll in historic downtown, which holds the honor of being a Georgia Main Street City.  Search for antique treasures in one of our many shops or let dining become an experience as you set the stage - from historic structures located in the midst of green pasture to quaint in-town finery.

Business is thriving, newcomers are arriving, and money is changing hands - all signs of a healthy economy.

Employment is up more than 65 percent since 1985, with 12 new industries and more than 2,000 new manufacturing jobs added in the past five years.

Easy access to transportation routes, a skilled labor force and a demonstrated commitment to civic improvements are among the many factors contributing to the strong economic climate.

Enriched with nature-based and historic attractions, along with other unique tourism destinations, Douglas is becoming a great place to escape the day-to-day stresses or large cities.  This community of 13,000 is blessed with many amenities that serve the purpose of attracting visitors to Douglas.
