Coffee
County and its county seat, Douglas, are deep
in Georgia, tucked between the Okefenokee
Swamp lands to the south and open
farm plains to the north. Yet no one can accuse this county of being a sleepy, Southern
local.
Douglas-Coffee County, once occupied by Creek Indians,
was named after General John Coffee, a hero in the War
of 812. Douglas
was developed in 1858 and became a chartered city in
1899. The
town was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a presidential
candidate running against Abraham Lincoln.
Douglas is recognized as one of the most progressive
cities in Georgia.
